About the Masterclass

Introduction to Windsor Chairmaking with Bern Chandley is a Masterclass designed to provide participants with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Windsor Chair making utilising traditional techniques that have stood the test of time. This 2-day Masterclass will include chair geometry, joinery layout and joinery construction including drilling compound angles accurately by hand, reaming tapered mortices, correct use of wedged through tenons, seat shaping, chair assembly and glue-up. During the Masterclass participants will complete their own three-legged stick-chair which they can take home.

As a special treat Bern will be demonstrating and instructing on the correct use of travishers which are one of the key tools for making Windsor chairs. The unique shape of travishers allows the tool to fit comfortably in your hand and makes the process of wood sculpting a pleasure, don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn proper use of these traditional, fundamental woodworking tools. Bern Chandley’s 2-day Masterclass will equip participants with techniques for building traditional Windsor Chairs and will also provide them with a range of fundamental design and woodworking skills flexible enough to approach alternative woodworking challenges. The Bern Chandley 2-day masterclass will be held at FAB9, 90 Maribyrnong Street Footscray, on Thursday the 8th and Friday the 9th of August 2019.

Included in your ticket price is entry to both days to the Wood Dust Timber and Tool Marketplace, this event is held in areas adjacent to the FAB9 workshops.

All meals, materials and basic equipment are supplied, and participants are provided with a recommended tools list covering the more specific tools required. Each day starts at 9.00am sharp and concludes at 5.00pm. Morning and afternoon tea served at 11.00am and 3.00pm respectively. Lunch served at 1.00pm for 45 minutes. Please advise of any dietary requirements.

Students to wear sturdy clothing, covered shoes and bring their own personal eye and hearing protection equipment. Please arrive 30 minutes early on Thursday the 8th for registration and induction.
