Unlocking the Secrets of Japanese Tools

with Hiroshi Yamaguchi

Thursday 18th October, 2.30pm – 5.00pm

Hiroshi Yamaguchi is a traditionally trained Japanese woodworker who now lives and works in Canberra. In this Short Masterclass, Hiroshi will demonstrate how to prepare, sharpen and use a range of traditional Japanese hand tools including Japanese hand planes (Kanna) and Japanese chisels (Nomi). Japanese tools usually cut on the pull stroke and employ blades that are both harder and thicker than their Western counterparts. Such tools need specific knowledge to achieve the best performance.
